I wonder if you can see what I mean when I say there is a demand on every aspect of creation for action. Moreover, that this phenomenon of life is absolutely interrelated, and every aspect can only live by facing this demand completely.
I wonder if you see the truth of that. The truth, that like the cells in the body, every aspect of creation is immaculately connected in this vast creation, and that true participation... true action requires TOTAL intelligence. It really is important for us to take a moment and go into this. And so I wonder if you see that this action of which I speak can only arise in a way that is absolutely in touch with the burning fact of every other aspect of creation. And everything that exists is born into this demand. And everything that is born is equipped to face this demand. However, while humankind was born into this demand, and while we are equipped to face it, we have not been meeting it. Human kind is currently in the thrall of an immense sickness.... it's a sickness far worse than any of the outbreaks that we have come to know as sicknesses... for it is a sickness in which we are compelled to miss completely the entire point of life... it's a sickness which at the deepest levels has taken us out of meeting the true demand of life, and has us spiraling in a disorder which is a complete abomination.
I'm afraid already that these words might seem too severe. After all, one might say, "look at what we've done as humans! Look at the marvellous cultures!" Please, if you look, you will see that our cultures are not an expression of totally interconnected, totally sensitive order. There is perpetual war, perpetual corruption, perpetual delusion, manipulation. Each one feels broken up inside... lonely, and so must participate in one superficial stunt after another, always living in denial and self protection...
So in seeing all this, is it possible to understand, to see the truth of the matter, and in so doing, be free of the root of this sickness? What is the actual phenomenon which could get in the way of the human mind meeting the demand for absolutely inter-related creativity and action?
The root of this sickness, if you look, is the apparently unavoidable tendency of the human mind to be overwhelmed and caught by a fire of personality... the fire that spreads which separates this vast, beautiful, singular creation of life into the billions human minds who are living in the deluded impression that there are two things, there is "me", and there is life... "me" and my life... and so are caught up in the entertainments, the fantasies, the pleasures, the strategies to give this falseness a sense of vitality. It's a sickness by which, in the name of "me", impressions, ideas and technical knowledge, all upstage the actual fact of life in relationship, and the brain - the mind - is trapped in a delusion where instead of life taking place in the actual situation, there is an attempt for life to take place in the impressions, ideas, and knowledge stored up as memory in the brain. This energetic wave of personalization is born of the human brain, and must instantaneously work to maintain the delusion that is taken for fact. This "work" is the struggle for power and control... as it does so, it's like a robot car following an out of date map. There is complete disorder. Life becomes merely a matter of vain attempts to celebrate a sense of control and power, to assert the delusion of personality, be it of the one or of the many. We are caught in a struggle to maintain pretense, while all the while we are inwardly terrified, violent, greedy... our daily life is based in intimidation, denial and war.
So... being very careful, we must ask if it is possible for the heart and mind live at the centre of consciousness itself, necessarily free of the fire of personality... in the astonishing flowering of this most wonderous phenomenon of life, of consciousness... in the totally interconnected dreamscape that is the very fact of isness... please... this is what we have to look into.

You know...A truthful, creative life is your BIRTHRIGHT! Not that you know or could imitate what that life might be... and that's just it. It's what life demands... don't you see? It's not something that you have to earn or assert...it's the fact of your life! This is it !
It is the demand upon the flower as it grows. It must do everything it does at the right time and in the right way or that's it. And, if it dies, there is no problem. That sort of passing is inherent in its birth... inherent in the demand.

a new world, a truthful life...
it doesn't matter what the situation looks like, each one of us can and must be clear about one thing: REaction to the situation is conflict, and only if reaction is understood at its very root is there the possibility of action in regard to the situation.
Most of us are living our lives in a perpetual state of reaction... i don't know if you see this. Life demands the action of a fresh mind, of a mind free to give rise to new and accurate relations, but our minds are anchored in a sense of the personal and so there is reaction, born to protect that attachment. And as the personal ALWAYS has its roots in the past, in memory, it cannot ever give rise to a truthful, creative solution. That movement of the personal with its beliefs, traditions, habits and preferences is memory attempting to be reality... the past attempting to be the present. So, there is no use in vowing, "I will not react," for the very root of reaction, is the phenomenon of personality and time... the "I WILL do something". You can see that such movement, the movement of this "me" thing is already REactive. The truth of this is shining in the very fact of what life is showing. It doesn't require a belief - any believer goes against what we are seeing here... look and see... this isn't a theory... it is inherent in what life is showing... it is see-able - factual. In seeing the truth of this, not living in that world where "you agree with me" or "disagree with me", but actually seeing the truth of what is happening, what's left?
Being clear about this one thing would mean that the mind is in its situation... that the mind IS the situation, and there is the clear seeing that any movement as "me", as "I'm gonna or not gonna," constitutes reaction. What's there then? Look and see... There is a certain sort of crisis isn't there? Isn't there something going on IN the crisis? Wouldn't this be the crisis of a new world being born? of a truthful life being lived?

To speak of horror...
To speak about horror or disorder is tricky, because the attached mind thinks it knows what horror, what disorder is... it sees itself as the heart of "respectability, and order" and anything that thwarts that centre is seen as disorder. So "murder" is called disorder, "poverty" is called disorder, "crime" is called disorder, and rightly so, but the societal person doesn't realize that their psychological dependency which creates these modes of "respectable" or "not respectable" is the biggest crime of all. The centre of the "me" itself, which is the heart of psychological dependency, is the essence of disorder, not the various symptoms and expressions. The so called "model citizen" is every bit as tied to murder as the murderer himself, because the whole movement of attachment, which then must live in ideas, is an abomination, is violent at its very inception. It requires killing and delusion to perpetuate.

completely creative action...
Consciousness itself... the very fact of "is-ness", is a single movement. For thousands of years, the human brain has been denying this fact. A most unfortunate, and obviously incorrect phenomenon has been occurring in which memory in the brain has stepped forward or refused to take its place as PAST. Memory has claimed a voice. Suddenly, in the single movement of consciousness, there is the mistaken impression that there are TWO things, "ME" and "CONSCIOUSNESS"... you see? Because this secondary entity, the establishment of the PAST as "me", is false, it is necessarily and ceaselessly thwarted by the fact of consciousness itself. For some reason, mankind has not been able to understand this, the stormy feeling of this contradiction has come to be called pain and fear, and the secondary entity has remained necessarily at battle, always working to "gain control", to "overcome" pain and fear, and to protect itself in what you can see is an impossible, downward spiral of horrifying futility. Something which isn't and can never be real has claimed the human organism. So it spends its days not only being torn apart on the inside, but also necessarily tearing apart the fragile and astonishingly complex fabric of this wonderous life in relationship, all in an impossible bid to bring the past into the present.
There are times where the orgainsm finds itself in a sphere whose details seem to strike deeper than the daily war, and for a moment, the war seems to be over... the memory appears to have
"won" and life seems to have a magic about it. This is the phenomenon of pleasure. Identified with the memory of that pleasure, instantly, the "me" wants more of it, becomes dependent upon it. Sex, drugs, a pleasing vista, a waterfront view. In protecting itself, the secondary entity joins with other secondary entities to perpetuate its war on the fact, and so sets up organizations, traditions, governments, religions, "relationships", channels of conduct by which the war is made "respectable", noble, pleasurable, "spritual" even. Interpersonal pleasure becomes a commodity as I must find out the image you are nurturing in yourself to fight with consciousness, and stroke that image, giving you a hit of pleasure, control and righteousness... you become dependent upon me, so as you stroke the image in yourself, you stroke my image, and we live in a struggle to perpetuate a pleasurable delusion, perpetuating human attachment and war.
So please, if i may suggest it, don't ask "what to do?" Because if you look, who is asking? Isn't it just more of that secondary entity? Please, look and see the truth of all this. For such a mind there could be only the seeing of "what is", the fact of consciousness. Ultimately...
Ultimately, life demands and could only provide clear relations with every aspect of creation - but do you see how this demand, and the inherent possibility that there be creativity and action, cannot be translated, asserted , chosen or controlled, but only born where the mind understands it... truly - IS it ... for what could this secondary "translator", "asserter", "chooser" or "controller" be? Do you see?
Creation is the perceived. The sum total, maximum expression of creation is the perceived... so what then would be this "perceiv-er", this separate thing by which humans are all "trying to live?" You see? The "perceiv-er" is false... is an error... the perceiv-er that thinks it "can do something" about the perceived... such thought with its thinker is already a destructive skid in the brain. Because the perceived is necessarily new. Any time taker, any preference holder, any choice chooser, any belief maker is necessarily the old, and is a process of delusion which has stuck in the brain... a distortion. Please... please... take a moment and look... this isn't just more writing to consume... there is no idea here to remember... both you and the writer, in order to live truthfully, must immediately undertand and live an awareness which has nothing to do with ideas... it's absolutely important, and in a way, quite simple for us to go together in this inquiry.
This is the moment for action, for a life that is universally accurate. Life could accept nor create anything else! Understand this moment and it would be literally impossible to create disorder... in understanding there is the light of creation.
So listen...though there is a demand for action, this entity which says, "I", "I am going to act, I am going to do something," this entity will never live a life that is universally accurate and creative. That movement is the very essence of disorder. Just see the truth of this. Seeing the truth of this, you can also see that such seeing has no personal demands, and yet its demand for change is absolute. Wow... just look at it!
There is a demand for action, but it is like the demand for action in a river - there must be movement... change ... because it is all connected and things must take their place... But action occurs within every aspect of that interconnectedness, it is not a separate phenomenon... there is no separate platform from which action occurs... no "me, I'm gonna act in this churning thing based on this or that." That is conflict, struggle, separation, delusion. That is the phenomenon of the personal - a sickness born in the human mind. And don't say, "okay, I'm gonna get rid of this sickness"... that is just too absurd... you can so easily see that that is just more separation, more time.
So, just see the truth of all this... seeing, therefore, with a mind that sees the fact of its own being... that sees that the fact is actually free of any movement as "me", as "time". And if there is such looking, perhaps such seeing is total, completely creative conduct... a truthfull life... action.

ACTION is order...
ACTION is order. You see? Not "me, and my action." "Me and my action" is the essence of DISORDER. But understanding all of this would be ACTION. There is a movement there, a living thing. Order is not a thing that you have in mind. If think you know what order is, and therefore there is time, and a seperate controller, asserting and maintaining and struggling, then there is no order. If order is something which will occur in time, then what is happening in the meantime must be disorder... this is impossible... order will not rise out of disorder... order could only rise out of order.
In living, there will be a certain kind of eventual, a change over time that must be done, but not really... not at the level of action order and communication. For there would never be an aiming at something in the future... the future thing would come, but only as it is ceaslessly born of the right action, right now.
And SEEING is that right action isn't it? Not some gesture or ritual designed to control or change the nature of consciousness this way or that?

See this... the seeing of this is a clarity that has nothing to do with "me being clear"... it is the pristine clarity of consciousness itself, which is its own action... it's own sanity.

Seeing "what is" is the miracle of life... the point of life. At this point the miracle of life, the point of life goes out the window.

understanding lived ...
The fuel which fires most of the immensely grotesque expressions of human disorder might be oil, but the root of human disorder was alive and well long before we started to burn oil to "get things done." The human mind has been on an erroneous tear. Please don't be fooled into believing that our buildings, flags, and machinery are an expression of intelligence. Deep inside, we remain greedy, tortured and confused, the contradiction and superficiality of our lives is obvious, and intelligence has gone out the weapon adorned, technologically advanced, legally ratified window.
So, what is most important is the possiblity that confusion might be understood, and that that understanding therefore be lived, right here, right now, in you, the reader. Understood does not mean "figuring out" or "concluding about." Understanding implies, doesn't it, a movement of comprehension, of seeing which is necessarily free of conflict? Can we go together into such understanding? What would impede such understanding? Doesn't belief, theory, impede seeing? It does. Obviously. More important, however, is understanding the "believer" the "theorist." What is this separate stance, this "controller" in the human mind? Surely, ANYTHING it does impedes understanding? Can you see the truth of this? In such seeing, there is understanding.
And such understanding is not property. Such understanding is not to be owned and then propegated. So there is no system of understanding, no authority, and therefore no time. There is just this immense conflict, immense confusion which demands understanding. The action of understanding would be the action of life - the brilliant phenomenon of the fact of consciousness, living itself with intelligence, entirely free of conflict.

what life shows...
If you look, right here, right now, you will see and understand the entire nature of life.
What is life showing? Realize, please, the simple sanity that the past is just an idea - a memory, and the future is just an idea, constructed of memory. So what is the truth of the personal entity which says, "me, I am in the present?" This too is memory, isn't it?
Seeing the truth of this, just look. Live the majesty of complete inaction in regard to what life is showing. Notice that that which is shown, exists free of personal will... life exists whether "you like it or not"... and therefore, the exertion of that personal will is conflictual... it can only move to assert the past, what else? Could will assert the present? Of course not. That is the phenomenon of conflict and misery. So, "inaction" of that separate entity, would leave only "the shown" which I suggest is supremely and most intelligently active. Seeing the truth of this would mean the end of struggle, and perhaps the beginning of action.
Seeing this, understand the process of creation. No matter what a person has been through, or what situation they might be in, at this very moment there is a demand that they give rise to a life that is immaculately, universally in order, immaculately creative... and the possibility of this involves every scrap of attention and energy... so no one is ahead or behind, just as, in a body, all the cells must live in communion, and yet give rise to unique expressions. The origin of action is the complete end of reaction, the end of conflict, the end of personal momentum in regard to WHAT IS SHOWN.
After all, the phenomenon of THE SHOWN, at a glance, is the universal phenomenon of being, and the end of disorder requires action and intelligence immediately. This intelligence cannot be born of the past, or of an image of the future, so what's left? Only the shown... and what happens if there is no reaction whatsoever to the SHOWN? You have to feel this out and find out.
The phenomenon of THE SHOWN, free of reaction, would be order itself, would be the universal utopia that is being itself.

Human misery...
The attached mind - the mind in which the past as "me", the image, knowledge, has set itself as permanent and therefore become more important than the truth - such a mind will NEVER appreciate, understand or come upon the truth, the fact, the present. By definition, it is anchored in and dependent upon the past. The fact necessarily represents its demise. So this mind leeches energy from biology to aggressively protect and violently assert its presence in a horrifying bid to make an image stay alive... a mission which you can see is impossible. This is the downward spiral of human life and misery.
the basis of disorder....
Whether you have money or not, have a "girlfriend" or not, have "health" or not, there still remains a fact.... the fact of being itself.
And if there is to be order - true vitality - passionate creativity. there must be a mind which has nothing to do with an image of order, nothing to do with a conditional order. There would have to be a mind which is totally free of any conceptual conclusions or separative, speculative tendencies. A mind which is free to understand the fact - to live fully in the truth. So the mind which says, "there will be order when I have money, a girlfriend, or when I 'get rid of' this cough," is a deluded mind, a dependent mind. And if there is to be order - true vitality - passionate creativity. there must be a mind which has nothing to do with an image of order, nothing to do with a conditional order. There would have to be a mind which is totally free of any conceptual conclusions or separative, speculative tendencies. A mind which is free to understand the fact - to live fully in the truth. So the mind which says, "there will be order when I have money, a girlfriend, or when I 'get rid of' this cough," is a deluded mind, a dependent mind. creation...
Creation could only occur free of fear, time, thought and therefore conflict. The gestures which have been occurring born of the human mind, the so-called civilizations, have not been creative, but merely false, temporary assertions of the platform of personality which has a stranglehold on life through humankind. They have been one frightened, deluded state after another, always asserting a so-called "new order" - always "protected" by the entertainments of wealth, tradition, religion and adherence to formulas, the violent force of war, killing and despoilment of life with which we have become all too familiar.
We must understand not just the branches of human disorder, but the very root of it. Now look, this is no light matter. Not something that you can read about here as a concept and go back to your life and think about. What I am asking is, what is the actual root of human disorder? And currently all human life is this disorder - humans are at war, despoiling the planet, unable to come together and do the right thing, and yet we talk about, "proud families", national pride, and religious righteousness. People who believe that there is a fixed order that is maintained by politics, tradition, religion or "respectability" are living a delusion. This is the assertion of a dependent mind, a conflicted mind, and such a mind is violent. So what is the root of this? Can we understand, and perhaps it would end in ourselves? Isn't the root of disorder the stranglehold of personality as it separates and maintains its separation from the fact of consciousness? That phenomenon in the human mind by which a secondary entity, the "me" has separated from the fact of consciousness and claims control? Please look at this. There is the fact... the burning "isness" of life, and then there is this sense of "me" from which a sense of ownership emerges, a sense of "control." Is this phenomenon possible? Isn't consciousness factually only one thing? It is.
The key to creation, necessarily free of this stranglehold, would rest in the same place that action would occur if this stranglehold did not exist. Action is action... so, simply living, simply being aware...awareness of the fact of creation, but necessarily with a mind which sees the actual falsness of that sense of "personality," "me," separate from "you." Awareness with a mind that sees the truth: that it IS the fact of creation. Yes, the information in your brain is slightly different from mine, but at the burning point of creation, in which each being must live, any movement of a psychological "me, separate from you," is obviously a conflict in the mind and takes that being out of the fire of creation, and into the process of misery and delusion.
Conflict is like a snare trap where any "attempt to get out of it" makes the trap tighter, more ferocious, more powerful because both the conflict and the attempt have their roots in will - in personal will. The only chance for freedom is in the instantaneous realization that consciousness itself is not based in will. There would be the intelligence required to move freely - there could be no conflict.

the actual end of confusion...
Please... the root of reaction seems so pernicious. So called "artists" full of energy and display, feel called to decry the obvious symptoms of the deluded, confused human mind, but are unable to communicate the actual end of that confusion.
They recognize that the current figurehead of human attachment and knowledge is creating havoc, and so call for its impeachment, but in the same sentiment, they call for a new leader, apparently not realizing that it is the process of dependence with its various figureheads which is the problem, and not simply the figureheads themselves. After all, who is doing the impeaching? Isn't it just a process of changing the figurehead of the process of human control, a process which by its very nature is corrupt? It's like ceaselessly changing the commander of a war vessel, expecting the end of war.
The end of confusion, war and disorder could only arise of a mind which sees the end of conflict in itself... and no leader, personality, experience or regime can bring this about.

what to do?
The question in life is not "what to do?" For who is this separate entity which is standing back from the burning fact of life that thinks it can do something about the fact? It's the "me" isn't it? And what's that? If everything is happening RIGHT NOW, then is it possible that a separate chooser can bring about order in the fact? I don't know if you see the impossiblity of that... and anything it comes up with in terms of "what to do", could only be something created by thought... an image... and that impossible separate entity throws itself into the image, and calls that action.
So... if a question is helpful... if there is a truthful question, then it would be "can life be LIVED free of conflict?" Can the root of conflict be seen and therefore dropped? Can life unfold, be born within its own astonishing accuracy and intelligence? The brilliance of this question is that firstly, you don't know. It implies the truth of the fact that action is not a product based in memory. There's a demand there for finding out... secondly, it equires an understanding of WHAT GETS IN THE WAY OF LIFE, not an image of WHAT TO DO... you see?

Sustaining disorder takes energy...
The energy to manifest disorder is generated by the friction of a mind which is attached. And the branches of human disorder take great amounts of energy to sustain...they are based in the belief that "no one else can come upon creativity either - so we just have to control and manipulate" If the mind were to come upon true creativity, true freedom, there would be not only the bottoming out of the platform of disorder, but also the end of the energy supply which keeps its various expressions going. So... one always seems to be asking what one can do about the disorder that is perceived in the world.
So... understand! Only a fire of understanding, of what's there when attachment and reaction is understood, could bring about the kind of change that is necessary if the insanity of humankind is to meet an end.
If there were the understanding of attachment, humans would find it literally impossible to create disorder. Such awareness would be its own totally intelligent, sensitve and creative action.

What matters...
What matters is that you and I, right now, understand what it means to be free of reaction. Not the writer telling you a theory of what it means and you accepting it or rejecting it, but for both of us, the actual understanding of this moment, the actual going through of it which requires an immediate movement free of reaction.
The abomination, the despoilment and the disorder of life, is a toxic fog of reaction, which means no whole action. Which means gestures or negligences which are not born in the truth and of the truth, but born of a mind which translates the truth , the fact, to protect a sense of control. So reaction and therefore disorder has its roots in the human mind. We know all the horrifying symtoms and expressions of this disorder, this reaction, but what is the root? That is our question.
Now before you say, "I don't react, or I'm not going to react," please look. The roots of reaction, if you but look, are the very delusion that is the "ME"... the very platform which says, "I do this or don't do that." Please look at this. Please. The "ME" is that sense of personal choice, personal control, belief, and continuation which has congealed and propagated in the human mind. It IS reaction. It necessarily sees itself as separate or different from the fact of awareness (or in it's separation romantically asserts "I am one with creation"), and so thinks it can act on awareness to change it or "maintain order". This is the churning contradiction and conflict of human life.
If you look, you will see that this apparently separate entity can be nothing but a bundle of memories claiming authority over the actual fact - the misery and conflict that is happening. It can only choose and control from the standpoint of the past, obviously, so everything it chooses and would control into being could only be of memory, and therefore necessarily at odds with what is actually happening... always perpetuating the disorder... never a creative act. That's obvious isn't it? Are you seeing the truth of this? A mind, which is in the truth of this would be like a light which sees the falseness of any movement away from the fact as "me". For such a mind, observation could only take place free of "an observer." Such a mind would be unavailable to the roots of reaction, the "me", and would therefore be an end to the fog of reaction and human disorder. There would be a life of passionate action.

Observation without reward
Questioner: "I have listened to you for many years and I have become quite good at watching my thoughts and being aware of every thing I do, but I have never touched the deep waters or experienced the transformation of which you speak. Why?"
Krishnamurti: "I think it is fairly clear why none of us do experience something beyond the mere watching. There may be rare moments of an emotional state in which we see, as it were, the clarity of the sky between clouds, but I do not mean anything of that kind. All such experiences are temporary and have very little significance. The questioner wants to know why, after these many years of watching, he hasn't found the deep waters. Why should he find them? Do you understand? You think that by watching your own thoughts you are going to get a reward: if you do this, you will get that. You are really not watching at all, because your mind is concerned with gaining a reward. You think that by watching, by being aware, you will be more loving, you will suffer less, be less irritable, get something beyond; so your watching is a process of buying. With this coin you are buying that, which means that your watching is a process of choice; therefore it isn't watching, it isn't attention. To watch is to observe without choice, to see yourself as you are without any movement of desire to change, which is an extremely arduous thing to do; but that doesn't mean that you are going to remain in your present state. You do not know what will happen if you see yourself as you are without wishing to bring about a change in that which you see. Do you understand?
I am going to take an example and work it out, and you will see. Let us say I am violent, as most people are. Our whole culture is violent; but I won't enter into the anatomy of violence now, because that is not the problem we are considering. I am violent, and I realize that I am violent. What happens? My immediate response is that I must do something about it, is it not? I say I must become non-violent. That is what every religious teacher has told us for centuries: that if one is violent one must become non-violent. So I practise, I do all the ideological things. But now I see how absurd that is, because the entity who observes violence and wishes to change it into non-violence, is still violent. So I am concerned, not with the expression of that entity, but with the entity himself. You are following all this, I hope?
Now, what is that entity who says, `I must not be violent'? Is that entity different from the violence he has observed? Are they two different states? Do you understand, sirs, or is this too abstract? It is near the end of the talk and probably you are a bit tired. Surely, the violence and the entity who says, `I must change violence into non-violence', are both the same. To recognize that fact is to put an end to all conflict, is it not? There is no longer the conflict of trying to change, because I see that the very movement of the mind not to be violent is itself the outcome of violence.
So, the questioner wants to know why it is that he cannot go beyond all these superficial wrangles of the mind. For the simple reason that, consciously or unconsciously, the mind is always seeking something, and that very search brings violence, competition, the sense of utter dissatisfaction. It is only when the mind is completely still that there is a possibility of touching the deep waters."

understanding the end of conflict... the beginning of freedom...
Consider "the personal"... I wonder if as you read you see the demand that we look into the truth about the nature and structure of "the personal"... I'm suggesting that all disorder, corruption and misery has its origins in this most false phenomenon...
First off... if I may suggest it, don't get carried away by assumtions about what I mean when I say "the personal"... let's just look... perhaps hesitatingly. I'm not working to propagate or back up some sort of theory, concept or belief. I'm working to live truthfully, to communicate truthfully in relationship so that there can be freedom, so that all people are free of fear, free of conflict... absolutely creative. I'm suggesting that we look into - see if we can be clear about what gets in the way of this... I'm suggesting that we have to understand this, much as we have to understand war, which comes right down to the conflict within ourselves, the grinding cycle of dominance and manipulation. What prevents creative release? What prevents creative action from occuring? What is the orgin, the platform of conflict? Is it possible to see it, and for life to take place free of it?
Isn't the platform of conflict as follows: that fire in the human mind whose presensce creates and perpetuates a sense of "me"? An apparently separate psychological entity? An entity which feels that it has control? You see? There is the fact of this moment, of consciousness... and then there is this thing which says, "me, I am perceiving consciousness, and I can do something about it." Isn't that the conflictual, downward spiral of human activity? Isn't that the platform which prevents the creative, passionate response within the human organism?
I know that for thousands of years we have been conditioned to believe otherwise - that it is "our will" or so-called "divine will through us" that creates civilization. But just look and this is exposed as vain, superficial spin. Why? Because in that scenario, there are two things. There is the fact of consciousness, and then there is that "me" thing, and the "me" is going to do something about the fact of consciousness... This is insane... impossible... life is occurring right now, it is a total movement. What could this separate entity be but the past, deluding itself into a sense of "personal power"? A clump of past images attempting to maintain coherency. It's impossible. I don't know if you see the truth of that.
Most unfortunately, in our delusion, we have created a world where this separate entity does appear to "get its way," however, all one has to do is look and feel to see the falseness of this world, the contradictions and corruptions at work... see that it "gets its way" at the expense of the very foundations of its existence, tearing apart the fragile and complex web of inter-relationships.
The insanity of the personal is inherent in the fact of consciousness, so it isn't "a belief" or a "theory"... not something that "you" have to figure out. Just as in looking, or feeling, one can perceive a cut on the skin, so can one see the falseness of the personal. Seeing the truth of consciousness doesn't have anything to do with belief, or most importantly, a believer. The possibility of the end of misery rests in looking, not looking "for something", but merely looking at WHAT IS because there is no choice! Anything other than what is is a fictitious creation of the past. Action might involve such a creation, but could not be based in it as the mind is trying to do now. No... Freedom rests in understanding, in seeing, in gently questioning so that the grip of personality can find no hold... looking, seeing that indeed, it can't be "me" looking, but that the so-called observer and the observed are ONE. In such seeing, wouldn't there be no choice but for the mind to give rise to a movement which was directly responsible to the fact of the matter, and necessarily free of the past? Look and see!

Anything other than what is is a fictitious creation of the past. Action might involve such a creation, but could not be based in it as the mind is trying to do now. No... Freedom rests in understanding, in seeing, in gently questioning so that the grip of personality can find no hold... looking, seeing that indeed, it can't be "me" looking, but that the so-called observer and the observed are ONE. In such seeing, wouldn't there be no choice but for the mind to give rise to a movement which was directly responsible to the fact of the matter, and necessarily free of the past? Look and see!

Understanding war...
People... we have to understand war. Please... we can't continue to live life with the acceptance of war... careful... this doesn't mean we "reject it" either... but let's understand it, and we will see that it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. In that seeing, there will be creative action IN LIFE, it wouldn't require being "against war."
The gross manifestations of war are the movement in consciousness which finds someone thinking that it is "okay to kill" to protect a sense of psychological security or a network of people who share the same sense of psychological security... a sense of control... now...look... don't just say "war is wrong", but please look into the root of war in your self - is the root of conflict understood in you!? is the root of war over inside of you? Is it understood in this very moment?! Is the movement which is: the controller, the sense of "psychological security," the "me I am separate from you" - which is fear - which is ownership - which is struggle .... is it over in you?! Otherwise, though you might never swing a fist, you are directly connected to war - to the perpetuation of every gruesome thing which is taking place in consciousness....
Consciousness is a totally interconnected organism, and the human mind's tendency to fall into a sense of "personality" pulls the mind out of meeting that immaculate tension, and into a downward spiral of destruction based in "personal safety"... "control". The human organism is co-opted into a deluded campaign to attain something which by its very nature cannot exist.
It is fashionable to blame men for the horror of humankind because they are the ones who carry out the most obvious form of murder... but the frightened woman who relies on her social structure or nationality or "family" for a sense of psychological security or safety is participating in murder. Her mind is still caught in personal reaction, which is the very essence of violence and brutality. "Personality" with its attendant fear and dependence upon inner and outer violence is the root of all murder, and personality is a fire in the human mind which knows no gender.
Don't say, "I'm gonna live without personality." You can see that that is just more reaction... more continuation... more time... more "me". Understand the fire of personality through observation... only immediate, choiceless awareness could put out the flames of personality. For if you just look, you will see that awareness itself is free of that sense of "me". And such looking is its own intelligent, creative action.

Generating reality... living... would be the "hardest" thing... the most demanding thing... not in the sense of struggle or effort... but just look... the FACT of life is immovable..."hard" ... you see!? "Harder" than your sorrow - ALWAYS! because there is no time in creation, no time for a belief, no time for a story... creation involves everything! The so-called "hardship of life". not that it doesn't exist, but to accept it in the sense of "put up with it," is an escape from action into a personal story which is conflict and contradiction...never action.
LIVING must be a ceaseless birth. So... the phenomena of corruption can only be solved IN this giving birth...

which means no eventual success...
"Success" has to be now or never. You see? Success is a movement NOW. And so you can see that success cannot have "proof". There's no litmus test for true "sucess" or for "peace". Govenments like to say that there will be "peace" in a country once we have killed all the insurgents. Bull shit! One can't be unsuccessful now, "working towards success in the future." So true success would be the quality of mind which immediately sees the nature of the lapse into personality and simply wouldn't do it. Such a mind would be incapable of doing the wrong thing. Such a mind would be highly active, sensitive.
Yes... there will be an eventual this or that, but an eventual this or that that is free of conflict requires intelligence IMMEDIATELY. Not "what you think is intelligent" . Not "what you think is creative." These are but more escapes, more stories. The nature of intelligence and the root of disorder are missed...

The possibility of order, of total action, is then at once an infinitely complex, and yet totally simple affair. Slogans, vehicles don't touch it. There is a demand for seeing, and for the birth which could only take place in that seeing.

True co-operation...
The key to true co-operation is the immediate understanding of the root of disorder. If a mind is free to do the right thing, there is no choice - it will do the right thing... now... be careful... the right thing is not a matter of following a course of action... you don't "know" what the right thing is... the right thing could only be a living creation which could only unfold and generate if the mind is free to change and transform absolutely ... and such a mind must be free of a separate centre: the human tragedy of "the me", with its beliefs and preoccupations... So action cannot be about following a course of action - because what's doing the following? A separate entity. And what could the course of action be but a creation based in the past, and therefore old... an insufficient response to the true demands of the present.
Awareness itself is free isn't it?... can a brain simply stay with itself... with the fact... without that sense of "ME" claiming validity, and therefore making gestures?

the market...
In the street today, there were people enjoying the sun, watching other people, shopping, playing. People of all kinds and sorts. You wondered about sorrow... about corruption... about the anxiety of people, the interpersonal tension, about the striving of people... about what was trying to happen... what's trying to happen?... is there a universal order that we can live?
This order could only be the creation of a mind which understood reaction. You see? The fire... the stillpoint that is the explosion of existence that each brain must understand must be necessarily free of RE-action... which means, free of a secondary entity within the brain... you see? Free of an entity which sees itself as separate, and its GONNA DO SOMETHING (OR NOT) ABOUT EXISTENCE. Just look, there is the explosion and profound order that comprises the SHOWN-NESS of existence (WHAT IS is seen), And then typically, and most unfortunately, there is that nugget of stuckness in most brains which is that sense of "ME, I am separate from existence, and what am I gonna do to protect myself, furthur myself, get a sense of control..." Seen?
So, that "nugget", that centre of "control" is reaction... and anything it does is furthur reaction... This whole phenomenon is the misery, the draining unfortunateness of human life.
Now look... The truth of this, if you but look, is shown. So that whole sense of "what I'm gonna do about it," in that seeing, is void... right? Because as we have seen, that's part of reaction.

the controller...
I think it might be worthwhile to look at the nature of "the controller." In life, there is a demand for creativity in relationship. This demand is typically never met, because a centre of control sets itself up in the typical human mind, and energy goes into maintaining an image. Now this is very delicate territory... we are not suggesting that a person be "out of control", we are touching upon that phenomenon of the controller, and if you look, you will see it is a contradictory phenomenon...
For is the controller different or separate from the thing which is to be controlled? Of course not. And what could this controller be but the past? You see? The memories within a particular being working to stay coherent in a completely new present. This process of the controller is the root of human misery and disorder. It works to live in an "unchallenged" repeatable world, and such a world is delusionary, must claw apart the very fabric of existence and be defended with violence. See the truth of this and understand what constitutes action.

can we go into it together?
right now, is it possible that we come together truthfully, freely, and move together in creative exchange? Can we speak and reflect such that every aspect of our being is involved in creation... such that the root of conflict is left behind, such that we are seeing clearly, with no dependence upon belief, dogma, or a sense of control... surely those things must fall away?
If we are going to communicate, which merely means live together, what place has belief? You see? What is belief? Isn't it an idea - a creation of memory, in memory? So surely, no-thing in this brain or that brain, put together and stored up as knowledge and memory and idea can ever BE THE FACT OF WHAT IS HAPPENING? Of course not... and if we are going to communicate, live together, live truthfully and creatively, surely you can see that it must happen in the truth... not in an idea of the truth. So can we see the truth of that... the truth of this moment, and can we stay with it...go into it together? Give rise to action based in truth, not action based in memory, which is mere RE-action?

There was an ease of movement as the weather was warm... the first spring shoots were poking through the dead grass of winter, drinking in the sunlight. The trees were shining and you marvelled at the light and line of the forest.. even this small patch of ravine in this enormous city. Sitting on the riverbank, there was what at first seemed like enormous pain, but only from one tiny perspective... a pespective which moved itself through as you sat, hearing the river. Watching the spirited explorations of a muskrat swimming thorough the water.
In the cafe, there were students working on laptops, a business person interviewing another about "fifteen hundred and eighty-one units that they had for sale". A group of four young women, making plans to go out for dinner. The baristas seemed tired and strained. What is this burden that people carry? The quiet desperation? What is the root of it? We can take no more explanations, no more conclusions, no more "beliefs" which paste over the pain, the contradiction.
It is not possible to piece together a life that is truly creative. A truly creative life can only be born in a mind which understands and therefore has nothing to do with reaction, with choice. Because what is the chooser? You will say it is the witness, or the higher self, or God, or my inner knowing... but that is all fiction... the "chooser" can only be the past, trying to maintain itself in the present. The chooser and its process are an incomplete, contradictory phenomena which never produces action. It is a deluded process of consuption and conflict... both inner and outer.

Inherent in that word RE-ACTION is that sense of "again"... like RE-PEAT - and so reaction exposes itself for what it is - a repeated action. So... this is not ACTION is it? Life requires movement which is fresh and new... whole action. Typically, however, our lives are based in reaction... "THIS IS WHAT I DO, THIS IS HOW I HANDLE THIS SITUATION", we are like machines... repeating, repeating, always protecting a false sense of control, never living with a sense of universal integrity... our lives are contradictory. If we could understand RE-ACTION at its root - perhaps ACTION might be there.
Is there a movement which has never been made before?
Doesn't this require a very different mind? A mind which is free to feel, to look? Free to "not know" what is going to happen? What gets in the way of feeling, looking? Isn't it that sense of "me, I am separate, I am busy or not busy, I am the chooser, the controller?"
Can a mind come up against that? Understand that?

Only understanding what it means to love could bring true, passionate, universal order to our life. This must occur immediately... there is no authority, no course of action... you do not "know" what it means to love... you can not project that knowledge and then act it out, calling that "love". Love would be born of a mind which saw the falseness of that whole movement of knowledge as personality... in such seeing would be love. Love is immediate and requires the putting away of that sense of "me" and "you".

see the truth of this...
the catastrophe of human life is the brain's tendency to be caught in a sense of the personal - which is merely its past images claiming authority. Images - structures in the memory - claim a voice and try to take precedent over the fact of what is actually happening. The images and their process are "the personal". There is "adjustment" within and without to accommodate for this "personal". The adjustment process is the churning grind of human misery and confusion, pain, occasionally escaped by pleasure. The personal is false in that it is based in the past - it is merely images - it is the past - it is immediately at odds with the burning fact of the present...the truth. No matter what "the personal" does there is conflict, delusion and isolation. The personal IS conflict. and in the name of the personal, every kind of horrific act, abomination, negligence, disorder, dullness,and immorality is manifest. It is always trying to keep itself "alive", and so there is never true understanding and therefore never total action.
Is it possible, then, right now, for the mind to simply SEE THE TRUTH OF THIS? Doesn't consciousness itself show the truth of this without there having to be belief - more imagery? Isn't the truth of this inherent in what is?

the root of the rut...

Most brains are conditioned to translate - to exist as though the sense of the separate psychological entity is a foundational fact...
In looking, or touching, or speaking about the nature of consciousness, the typical feeling is a sense of disturbance [and an adherence to that separate foundation] [as in] :
"But how can what you are talking about help ME?"
or...
"But what should I DO ? "
or...
"What are you suggesting?" [as in "what idea do you want me to adopt?"]
or...
"The only thing I can do is try to be good."
Apparently there is this overwhelming tendency to think in a rut. [whose origin is that sense of ME] And then we say, "I will think differently." And we don't see that that "I" IS the rut!

Walking through the city in the early morning, there was a freshness that was astonishing. The light, orange and dappled, was warming. There was a sense that anything was possible. In the market, it was still too early for most of the shops to be open. You took coffee and sat on benches. In the freshness, there was also a wincing... a pain... the settling in of the arrangements from yeasterday... "I gotta open the shop." "I gotta clean the sidewalk"

Reaction...
The possibility of a truthful, universaly creative life demands the immediate understanding of the nature of "reaction". What is reaction? I am speaking of it in the sense of a gesture which is divorced from the situation, and so does not constitute action or order. I'm suggesting that as long as there is the possibilty of reaction, there cannot be action. The beauty which emerges is that this means it doesn't matter what kind of horrible conditioning you've been through. Complete action in relationship (which is life) STILL demands complete understanding RIGHT NOW. If there is a shred of continuity, which is self protection with its correspondent reaction, true action cannot take place.

an immovable demand for passionate action...

Yes... nice one... I sooo hear you. .
I also see what you mean about behaviours ... I too have felt that hmmnn... annoyance with American and European arrogance and abrasiveness... the way it always seems so drastic, and I have often felt melted and impressed by the images of "asian or indigenous hospitality".... the sort of benign feeling.... I also have always admired cultures who still seem to embody a "connection to the earth" in a "natural way" as opposed to our technological worship, and i think maybe there are some capacities to be shared.
But I still feel this immovable fact staring me in the face which says that the true ordering of all this, the process by which true sharing would take place requires an inner revolution that is total... you see? Not from one THING to another THING, but revoution within THAT WHICH IS. It's kind of simple...easy to see. There really can't be this separate entity that thinks it has the power to choose its way through life and "have opinions", likes and dislikes... can there? I can't be sitting back from you with a bunch of theories that "I believe" and "a way of life that I lead that i believe is right" and call that sharing... the sitting back is the essence of not sharing. (even if "I plunge in" there still is separation because it's "me plunging in"). We can't have this separate entity staying on the superficial level, making changes to our superficial conduct, and calling that order. I think that is clear.
So when I talked about "Being universal love", i think we have to go really really slowly, right? Cause EVERYONE talks like that. I feel like I'm saying something very different... (and i think you are trying to communicate around this too, but i want to see if we can get a little clearer) I am not suggesting that there is a some thing that WE are not now, that WE must get to. We both see, i think, how the seeker with its seeking prevents seeing THAT WHICH IS. In fact, any effort at all is still a product of a mind that is separate, and therefore conflictual (not that one can drift). We also see that "wanting THAT WHICH IS to be different" is the same unfortunate process, because there is a "wanter" - which is the past. However, at the same time, all this doesn't mean that there isn't an immovable demand for order, for passionate action, it just means that it can't have it's roots in the past... can't be based in the past. Can we just see the truth of this?

We're just pointing here, just touching, enquiring... seeing if we can see the truth of what we're talking about... so I haven't given you anything to do, or propegated any theories, or suggested any regimes, or assumed any judgements.
Phew... I would say that in seeing this, if we are seeing this, the mind is in a crisis in which it cannot make a single move from a psychologically separate place. There would still be a demand for "personal" arrangements on the most superficial of levels - eating - clothing etc. , but doesn't the crisis remain? I would call such a crisis, "being universal love."
(there might be a temptation to say "but I don't see this." May I suggest that you doubt and question that voice - you know? Just don't say that. Not because there isn't some more we could talk about, and not that you should pretend, but because that voice is just more conclusion... that voice isn't interested in looking... not seeking, just looking.....)

There is no struggle in simply seeing the fact of struggle.

the black hole that is "ME"...
There is a black hole that turns people into slaves, killers, prisoners, and injured dependents.

For some reason... the synapses stick, so that an image, feeling... energy claims centrality... and then the brain gets captured, forced to "create" around IT... around the image!... and then the limbs and the gestures are all claimed - they all must maintain this centre, this thing (which by definition cannot exist... it is past, only an image) This centre and its process is the black hole of human misery and consumption.

I don't mean to be pedantic... you know? Abrasive... picky.
I'm afraid my gestures have been feeling that way for you. And they feel that way for me too, at least on the surface, and that sucks i suppose, but it strikes me that we can't accept the stupidity and dullness that exists on this side of the abrasiveness... I'm afraid that we're not seeing the whole picture... i'm suggesting that we aren't... and with a gentle looking...gentle touching, maybe the whole picture comes clear. And yes, that means the end of "everything I hold dear"... of course. I'm not interested in spoiling anyone's fun, per se, but that's not all that's going on for me in our conversations, or in my comments about situations and events. I feel quite clear that i'm not working to "be right", or propegate a philoshophy, or exercise a method, or follow a tradition, or "not follow" a tradition, or participate in a regime or maintain a sense of personal control.
I am seeing, living at the heart of, a demand for universal action. And that demand simply doesn't accept anything personal... "what I want/don't want". It doesn't accept it in this brain, and so it can't participate in the personal regimes of others - no matter how "respectable", no matter how ratified by tradition, no matter how "creative" - the tradition, the personal and collective momentum, of a millenia or of a day, is a corrupt, contradictory affair.
Ugh... it feels so harsh... I don't know why, I just know that if we don't find out what it means to be completely honest in life, then our amusements and pastimes and pursuits are really horrifying. Our laughter becomes the laughter of the dictator, our music, our dance becomes the next drug...holding down a state that is responsible for utter disorder. And that is going on. The state of the human "personal" is the state of dishonesty, of contradiction, of separation. Our "first world climate" is still the _expression of selfishness (not that the third world is selfless). Anyone can see it, and yet we talk about success., service and nobility.
And there really is no time for this understanding to take place is there? Will there be some eventual time when there will be seeing?... this seeing must be now or never. This doesn't mean pressure. There is no pressure, no obligation, no guilt. It's just a fact: there is this immoveable demand - understand wholeness immediately, or live in conflict. There's no authority in that. I think it possible to see that quite clearly. There is no authority - inner or outer. The chooser, "the authority", "the believer", is the essence of non-understanding... it can never "choose order" - that's what dr. frankenstein tries to do. "piece together (and maintain) a reality that 'works'." Sorry. Never gonna happen....

letter to my sister...
Here is a letter which is working to communicate truthfully. See first that the words themselves are never the thing described. Just as the word “tree” is never the actual tree, the actuality that these words are working to touch, is the burning fact of your life, which I suggest, is the burning fact of life itself. So as you are reading, is it possible not just to hear the words, but to be aware of the burning fact of this moment… the feelings and reactions, of which these words are but a very small part
So we are working to gently point out and see the actual fact of what is happening in life,
So that maybe there can be a free mind which is seeing the truth,
Not tied to any beliefs, speculation or hope,
and therefore a life of universal action, absolute intelligence and responsibility,
effortless, energized meaning.
Life is showing us immense disorder. Disorder is the fact, isn’t it?
We can identify thousands of different expressions of disorder,
But if one looks, one will see that all disorder shares the same root.
Is it possible to simply look, be aware, and see the actual root of disorder in daily life?
Are we looking? Or are we so broken up, so used to our pleasures, our false sense of control, our giving our lives over to authority - that we are just giving up? Wanting to be told what to do? Wanting to find the so-called “right” authority to whom we can give the responsibility of our lives? Let’s see if we can work together a bit, look together and find out the root of disorder in life. There is no pressure in this inquiry, no authority, there is only your life, with its demand for creative action. Life is showing disorder… what is its root? We might have several explanations coming to mind…. “The economy”, “the environment”, “the evil of mankind”, “genes”, “my foolishness” but may I suggest, everything is so interconnected. Let’s question these reactions a bit and see if we can get clear. Not rely on speculation, theory or conclusions?
We know that we can control one expression of disorder, but then a new one crops up. We can end one war, but meanwhile other ones are in the making. So what is the root? The ACTUAL root , not a concept we can pass around and be authorities about.
So let’s just look. Feel it out.
You see… Life shows what it shows. We see what life shows - what life IS. Spontaneously, effortlessly immediately, the fact of our life is shown isn’t it? Right now it is showing fear… conflict… great anxiety and tension. That is the fact. So go really slowly here. See the beauty of this. No matter what I think about it, the fact of my life, the misery, the confusion, the struggle and strife, with the occasional pleasure, it is illuminated. So… is it possible to understand at a single glance, the root of our contradiction, our inner and outer disorder?
Isn’t conflict perpetuated in us when suddenly there is that voice which says, “ME, I am seeing disorder.” I realize this might seem like a very challenging statement, but really it is quite simple. The fact of life is shown spontaneously, so what is this voice, “me” that pops into the scenario? Humans have lived with this voice for thousands of years. We have made it noble, we have based our entire culture upon it, but I’m suggesting that if one touches this and looks a bit, one will see that just as life shows the fact, it also shows that this movement away from the fact as “me” is a nonsensical, conflictual phenomenon.
Isn’t this voice necessarily the past, the memory of that particular brain, standing up and saying “I am alive” Doesn’t it represent a cleft in the brain? Separation? And therefore everything it does merely perpetuates separation and the nightmare of human struggle trying to accommodate for this separation?
How? Just look. There is the fact, which is disorder, and then there is this observer, this thing that thinks it is somehow different or separate from the fact, and it thinks, “I’m gonna do something about the fact.” This is akin to trying to make yourself fly by lifting upwards on your own belt buckle, isn’t it?
Just see the truth of this. If one merely looks, observes the nature of that which life shows, one will see that any movement away from the fact as “ME” and “what I’m doing, not doing, etc.“ constitutes the foundation of ALL HUMAN DISORDER, but most importantly, the disorder in one’s own existence.
Wouldn’t a mind, seeing the truth of this, lose its capacity to react as “me”? Wouldn’t such a mind have no choice but to be completely involved in life, therefore completely free of fear, completely free of reaction, and therefore free of the root of disorder – spontaneously creative and responsible in relationship? Feel this out… see if you can see the truth (or falseness) of what I am talking about.

To "get sorted out" - live at the place where you are already sorted out.
That would mean pure observation
Seeing IS sorted out.
It (the seen) will NEVER be "what you want"
it will NEVER meet any preset conditions.

sorrow is a reaction where what is desired to be seen is not seen. If there is looking and conflict is seen, or hell is seen... the reactions says... that shouldn't be happening .. isness has no time and there would be true action in regard to the seen.

To "get sorted out" - live at the place where you are already sorted out.
That would mean pure observation
Seeing IS sorted out.
It (the seen) will NEVER be "what you want"
it will NEVER meet any preset conditions.
The seen is "what you are" can it ceaselessly crash into itself... such crashing might be grace ... like the sun crashing into itself.

that in awareness

Being is absolutely demanding for each and everyone...
If there were not the spectre of the personal... the me, the we, there would be grace, order, and community with its total intelligence.

In all cases, there must be a poetic, figurative mind.
If gestures are allowed to refer to furthur gestures,
the mind is on a downward spiral of conceptualization.
If gestures are allowed to point to "what is happening",
there could be seeing
the truth and therefore action.

In all situations, love, impersonal seeing, is the right thing to do.

The true "must" is "that which is shown"
If the mind could stay with that, perhaps there would be action...
The "I must" is a consumptive, deluded reaction of momentum in which an image, the past, denies the "shown".

Seeing is the essence of freshness.
Seeing staleness, is freshness in regard to staleness.

Are we serious about ending the conflict and disorder of the human mind?
Me... the personal... is the origin of disorder... :me: is the tendency of the mind to stick in an impression.

The relentlessness that is action would have to put away “the platform”.

Awareness is the marriage… is the togetherness

“I” can’t do anything about “the shown”, but if there is no step away, what happens?

I finally accepted that we are already in love, already married.

People coming together…

Is it possible to be an authority, as in the one who knows and the one who doesn’t?
